Support Marlena's Nonviolent Communication (NVC) Classes
for People with Chronic Illnesses & Disabilities

Why is it called Bid for Compassion?

The tag line for Marlena's Teaching Fund, "Bid for Compassion," has multiple meanings:

"Bid" has two meanings.
  • Because this fundraiser is taking the form of an auction, we are asking you to literally bid on the items below that have been donated. Your bids will bring this fundraiser to life!
  • "A bid for compassion" is also a REQUEST for compassion. Requests are an integral part of NVC practice -- making requests of oneself or others to get basic human needs met. Due to being disabled and living on a government check that puts her well below the poverty line, Marlena has many basic human needs that are not being met. Therefore, we extend to you our request that if you would enjoy contributing to Marlena's well-being (and by extension, that of her students), we invite you to donate, bid on items, and spread the word about this fundraiser.
"Compassion" is also multi-layered in this context.
  • NVC is often referred to as "Compassionate Communication" because when NVC is truly understood and practiced with intent, we become compassionate to ourselves and each other. Since this auction will help continue NVC classes and practice groups for people who otherwise could not afford them, your assistance will bring more compassion into Marlena's students' lives.
  • Finally, and most importantly, Marlena embodies compassionate connection. In the way that she teaches and listens, in her voice and words, in how she structures classes and groups, in making herself available outside of class -- in a hundred different ways -- Marlena models and shares her compassion. By supporting this fundraiser, you are contributing to one of the most compassionate people you will be fortunate to meet.
